HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Police say a suspect from North Texas has been accused of assault in Houston after two people were shot while in a Texas Southern University dormitory parking lot.

Darrius T. Nichols was being held Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. City jail records didn't immediately list bond or an attorney to speak for the Nichols. Officials have said the 20-year-old, whose last address is listed in Cedar Hill, does not attend TSU.

Authorities are trying to determine what sparked Wednesday night's shootings. A woman, who's not a student, was treated and released. A man remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police are trying to determine if he attends TSU.

A TSU officer saw a gunman fire toward a crowd. The man refused to drop his gun and turned toward the officer, who shot at the suspect but missed.

The suspect surrendered.

Texas Southern University is a historically black university, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
