DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Hundreds of North Texas-area firefighters, police officers and EMTs gathered to take part in the annual Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Renaissance Tower on Saturday.

Retired New York Fire Department firefighters Robert Menig and Ray Pfeifer were on hand to meet the participants and thank them for honoring their 343 fallen brothers who died at the World Trade Center site. Pfeifer repeatedly said, "Thank you for remembering our friends," as he shook hands with the participants of the stair-climb challenge.

"The outpouring and the love from Texas firefighters is above and beyond," Pfeifer said.

He went on to say that this year, for the first time, the event also recognized the hundreds of firefighters and emergency personnel who survived the attacks but were left dealing with life-threatening illnesses.

"In New York City, there's 1,100 firefighters, paramedics and EMTs that are still sick and dying from 9/11 cancers," Pfeifer said.

At the top of the Renaissance Tower, a bell rang every time a first responder completed the climb.
