INDIANAPOLIS (CBSDFW.COM) — Keller and Hebron high school marching bands represented North Texas in the Bands of America Grand National Championships Finals in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Hebron finished No. 3 overall and won an award for outstanding musical performance. Keller finished No. 11 overall.
The high schools are two of 12 that advanced to the final round in the annual competition hosted by Music For All, a nonprofit that organizes national programs to support arts education. Four Texas bands total made the cut: Hebron, Keller, Round Rock and The Woodlands. The Grand National Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium kicked off Wednesday with preliminaries and concluded with finals on Saturday.
The bands' performances are evaluated by panels of music educators and experts. Bands are separated into classes for preliminaries and semi-finals, but the top 12 bands in the semi-finals, regardless of class, advance to finals, according to Music For All's website.
Keller's performance was called "Do Not Go Gentle," and this year is the band's first time in the Grand National Championships, according to the event's live blog. Hebron's band kicked off the night with its performance "360." This is also Hebron's first appearance in the event, according to the blog.
Keller Central also qualified for the semifinals and placed No. 22 overall.
