New Park-&-Ride To Only Benefit Carpoolers
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - For those who stare from behind the steering wheel at the bumper-to-bumper traffic on Interstate-30 between Fort Worth and Dallas, the building of a park-and-ride facility near the Beltline Road exit in Grand Prairie has been a welcome sight.
Herman Cook, a frequent driver on Interstate-30, said, "I think it will be a convenient way to conserve time, money and gas because you can go over there and you can park and get on a train or bus."
But wait -- there will be no trains or buses at this park-and-ride.
The $3 million, 350-space parking lot that is set to open at the end of the month is for carpoolers. "It says park-and-ride, but it's really a carpool lot," said Grand Prairie Transportation Director Jim Sparks.
Sparks said that the name has confused some drivers, and admits that it might take some time to catch on.
The City of Arlington has two similar park-and-ride lots. On many days, the lots are nearly empty. At 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, there were four vehicles parked at the lot at Interstate-30 and Lamar Boulevard.
However, Sparks said that when the managed lanes on Interstate-30 open next year, he expects the Grand Prairie park-and-ride lot to be in high use. When asked if he thinks drivers will use it, Sparks said, "When people are backed up on Interstate-30 trying to get downtown Dallas and they can hop in a managed lane and have a carpool at a discounted price, I think that answer will tell you."
While DART currently does not have plans to service the Grand Prairie park-and-ride facility, Sparks said that he believes that could change in the next couple of years.
