New Information In DISD Basketball Recruiting Scandal
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - There is new information in the recruiting scandal that rocked the Dallas Independent School District. Earlier this month, the district fired 15 employees - including the top management in the athletic program.
CBS 11 News has uncovered how the district uncovered what it calls "lies."
Home visit forms, signed by DISD coaches, claimed to have confirmed information 'in person.' The forms basically verified that the student athlete listed lived within their school's designated boundaries.
One form turned in by a coach said, "I walked to Gearion's room first, noticed his clothes, shoes, and book bag." But investigators later determined that all the details written were made up.
According to a report, under questioning one coach was, "unable to describe any details of the interior of the home or where in the home any of the bedrooms were located."
At least two DISD coaches admitted they never made any home visits, but said they were told by a supervisor to sign the forms anyway.
Investigators took particular note of one form where coaches claimed to have five different forms of evidence proving a student's residency. That alleged proof included both a rent receipt and a mortgage statement.
When asked about the documents and alleged proof, a coach reportedly responded, "I seen what I was told to see."
One coach implicated in the investigation, James Madison High head basketball coach Roderick Johnson, refused to cooperate. The report claims that after being placed on administrative leave he "failed to return any phone calls or messages left by investigators."
