IRVING (105.3 The Fan) - New Cowboys. Old numbers.

It's a fun game: Cowboys draftees get their freshly-assigned numbers and we try to attach significance to the assignments.

Ready?

Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott will wear No. 21, and you want this to be more Deion than Joe Randle.

Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith will wear No. 54 and there will be patience for him to even approach Randy White and Chuck Howley.

Nebraska defensive tackle Maliek Collins will wear No. 96, thus marking the end of Nick Hayden's run here.

Oklahoma defensive end Charles Tapper will wear No. 79. Is he the new "Beautiful" player...? Because Harvey Martin used to wear 79...

Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott will wear No. 10. Aikman was 8. Romo is 9. Dak's in the count-up!

Purdue cornerback Anthony Brown will wear No. 36 and be the first Cowboy to try to make it famous.

Central Michigan safety Kavon Frazier will wear No. 35, once worn by the great running back Calvin Hill.

Eastern Michigan running back Darius Jackson will wear No. 34, like fellow SPARQ (before there was SPARQ) guy Herschel Walker. Oh, Cornell Green, too.

Baylor tight end Rico Gathers will wear No. 80 because no basketball number is high enough and because he'll try to do some Tony Hill and Alvin Harper and (sometimes) Martellus Bennett things.
