NCTC Bus Crash Survivors Speaks About Accident
WITCHITA FALLS, TX (CBSDFW.COM) - One of the survivors of the bus crash near Davis, Oklahoma, late Friday that killed four North Central Texas College students and injured several others, has broken her silence.
Kaylea Armstrong was at a Sunday night Gainesville vigil to remember her deceased teammates.
Armstrong lost four teams: Meagan Richardson, 19, Brooke Deckard, 20, Katelynn Woodlee, 18, and Jaiden Pelton 20.
The women all were from small North Texas towns near the campus.
"I remember waking up in the middle of it as we were crashing and again, I blacked out and I don't remember landing.
I don't remember the crash at all. Next thing I know I'm awake. I'm on my feet and I hear my coach screaming girls this way," said Armstrong. "It was pitch dark pitch dark."
Kaylea Armstrong still hears the sirens and the screaming.
Armstrong was one of the last ones to get off the bus.
The first thing she remembers seeing was one of her friends crushed underneath.
"I was hoping it was a horrible nightmare and I would wake up," explained Armstrong.
The freshman softball player mourns for her friends, especially, Blue Ridge native Brooke Deckard.
The two were the best of friends.
"She was always there for me when I had family trouble, she's did everything she could for me, " said Armstrong.
Armstrong walked away with stitches and bruises.
She said it's hard remembering and hard being a survivor.
"We lost vital people for a team, vital people for friends and they were not only our teammates, but also our best friends."
Armstrong recovers at home near Wichita Falls.
She's not sure when she'll be back on campus.
Another teammate hurt in the crash wanted to attend the Gainesville vigil, but is still in critical condition and can not walk.
