Navy IDs Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Gunman As Gabriel Romero Of Texas
JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – The active-duty sailor who opened fire and killed two civilian employees, before fatally turning the gun on himself at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard near Honolulu on Wednesday was identified.
The Department of Defense identified the shooter as Gabriel Antonio Romero, 22. The Machinist's Mate Auxiliary Fireman served on the USS Columbia, a submarine stationed at Pearl Harbor. A military official said Romero faced non-judicial punishment for minor misconduct. Retired Army Col. Gregory Gross said that could have been something as simple as being late for work.
Thousands of employees witnessed the shooting that unfolded in about 23 seconds.
Romero killed a metals inspector apprentice named Vincent J. Kapoi and shop planner named Roldan A. Agustin. Both victims were from Hawaii.
The USS Columbia remains in dry-dock at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for routine maintenance.
Military officials have yet to determine a motive for the shooting.
