More Than 100 Expected To Attend Plano Crime Safety Meeting
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - An event in Plano next week is drawing huge interest. But it's a gathering that people wish they didn't have to attend.
A conference room at the Marriott will be the site of what's expected to be the biggest crime safety meeting the city has ever held.
Police say the meeting isn't directly connected to the search for a missing woman, but that's the reason as many as 200 people are expected to attend.
Lesa Lemke locks up for the day at a Plano tennis store that sits right across the street from where Christina Morris disappeared nearly three weeks ago.
"We're definitely aware of it and people come in the store and talk about it all the time," she said.
The mysterious disappearance of Morris has women who work and live around the Shops at Legacy wondering if they are safe.
Lemke said, "It's scary, because you walk to your car and everybody's looking at your cell phone." She told CBS 11 News that her recent concerns are one reason why she plans on attending the Plano Police Department's personal safety seminar next Wednesday.
During the seminar officers will explain -
- How criminals select victims
- How to be a less attractive target
- How to avoid dangerous situations
Police insist the meeting is not in response to the current missing person investigation.
"These classes are held throughout the year," explained David Tilley, the Public information Officer with the Plano Police Department. "We are just going to need a bigger venue with the number of responses we've had."
Those responses are from women like Lemke who won't feel secure as long as the missing flyer is still hanging in the window.
It would be good to know tips if someone does try to attack you or follow you," she said.
Police are asking people interested in attending the meeting next Wednesday at 7 p.m. to register ahead of time so they can be sure to get in. Space is limited and about 100 people have already signed up.
