More Criminals Are Using Fake Guns: Here's Why

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Real or fake?

It's become a common question as police come across more guns that sure look real, but aren't.

A woman was carjacked near Hwy 360 and Six Flags Drive earlier this week after a suspect shoved what she thought was a gun in her face in April.

Sunday, Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson tweeted photos of a B-B gun taken off a drug suspect recently.

It even had fake, removable ammunition.

"They had taken some hollow points and carved them out," says Arlington Police Lt. Christopher Cook.  "It was just a real looking gun.  You've got people with a lengthy criminal history carrying around a gun like that."

Arlington Police say suspects are telling them they're using fake guns during robberies because they think the punishment will be less severe if they're caught.

Police say those suspects are wrong.

Chief Johnson is calling for the state legislature to help law enforcement deal with this issue.
