MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) -  There's a new way to back the blue in Mesquite...  Bring books.

Mesquite Police are supporting reading initiatives for young people by asking the community to donate new or used children's books through the "Back the Blue, Bring a Book" campaign.

The one-day effort happens Tuesday, August 9 in recognition of National Book Lovers Day.

Donations may be dropped off in collection bins at the Mesquite Main Library, 300 West Grubb Drive from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. and at Mesquite North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Drive, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

"The timing of this campaign is perfect," said Mesquite Police Chief Charlie Cato.  "It provides the police officers the opportunity to share all the support they are getting in the community with a very worthwhile cause."

All the donated books will be given to the Mesquite Back to School Fair which happens on August 13.

The fair is scheduled for Poteet High School and Mesquite High School from 8 a.m. - noon.

This one-day book drive will also support the Mesquite Independent School District's early reading program targeted at improving the reading skills of students from prekindergarten to second grade.
