MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - A Mesquite man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for five counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

The sentencing came on Friday after 36-year-old Charles Dale Stegall pled guilty to five counts on June 29, 2016.

The investigation into these claims began when one of the victim's mothers reported the incident to the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

Retired Henderson County Sheriff's Investigator Nick Webb conducted the investigation, which eventually lead to Stegall's indictment by the Henderson Grand Jury.

According to testimony and witness statements during trial, the assaults occurred when the victim was between the ages of four and seven.

Assistant District Attorney Nancy Rumar said that this was one of the most emotional sentencing hearings she's worked in her 18 years. "These cases tear families apart," said Rumar.

District Attorney Scott McKee was pleased with the sentence and work that everyone put into the case. "The children in our community deserve the protection of law enforcement and the criminal justice system," McKee said.
