MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - Shots rang out late Wednesday night at a Collin County apartment complex. The incident ended with police officers shooting and killing an armed suspect.

While there was a lot of commotion last night, things were quiet Thursday morning at the Cliffs of Eldorado Apartments.

Police were alerted when a woman called 911 and said she and a child were stuck in a van. She claimed a man was holding them against their will.

McKinney police officers arrived moments later and located a white van. They said while attempting to take the suspect into custody "a struggled ensued, and the suspect produced a handgun and shot at officers."

Police returned fire, hitting the man several times. The suspect, who was later identified as Joseph Khammash, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 35-year-old man was a resident of McKinney.

The woman and child allegedly held hostage were not hurt.

McKinney police have requested the assistance of the Texas Rangers to investigate the incident.
