WASHINGTON (AP) -- GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona says Republicans will be united against any Supreme Court nominee put forward by Hillary Clinton if she becomes president.

However an aide later clarified that McCain will examine the record of anyone nominated for the high court and vote for or against that person based on their qualifications.

McCain's initial comments, in a Philadelphia talk radio interview Monday, suggest possible obstruction by the GOP without regard to whom Clinton might nominate. The result could be major conflict next year in the Senate and between Congress and the White House, given the possibility of several Supreme Court vacancies.

There is already one vacancy which Republicans have refused to fill after the death of Antonin Scalia early in the year.
