Mavs Weren't Aware Of Rashard Lewis' Knee Problem

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- Newly-acquired veteran Rashard Lewis is in need of knee surgery, and while the extent of his injury is unknown, it is nevertheless problematic because sources tell me that the Mavs signed Lewis without knowledge of the injury.

The 6-10 Lewis, 35, was signed to a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum. Team sources say the club is considering its right to void the deal, though agent Colin Bryant's comments to Yahoo suggest he's downplaying any problem.

"Rashard discovered he needs a medical procedure on his right knee to ensure he functions at a high level this season," Bryant said. "We look forward to him getting this behind him as soon as possible so he can continue his stellar NBA career."

Meanwhile the Mavs' top target for another roster spot using the $2.7-million room-MLE is Ray Allen, as we reported Tuesday.

But the Mavs know that's a "long shot" and are therefore also considering Jameer Nelson and Mo Williams for the spot. Williams has met multiple times with the Mavs; Nelson is scheduled for a meeting with the Mavericks this week.

Mavs veteran Shawn Marion is also on the market but as we reported Tuesday, he's not presently a candidate for the room-MLE.
