PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – A man who thought he was recording police brutality ended up running to help an officer struggling with a suspect in Plano.

"That was my impulse. I hate to say it but that was my impulse this cop is going to something stupid but I was shocked he did exactly what he should've done. This man is very professional and he knows his job," said Andre Harvey, who shot the cell phone video.

Harvey captured the struggle between Detective Jon Hoffman and a man who had just run out of 7-Eleven after stealing a charity donation jar.

Harvey and another day laborer, Kirby Sample shot video on their phone as Detective Hoffman struggled to arrest the 27-year-old man.

When Hoffman started yelling for help Harvey and Sample ran across the street and took the suspect down together.

Hoffman thanked both men at police headquarters and even bought them lunch.
