NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (CBSDFW.COM) - A 30-year-old man is recovering in a North Richland Hills hospital after he was shot in the leg while driving westbound along Loop 820 near Rufe Snow Drive. The incident happened at around 8:00 p.m. on Monday night.
According to North Richland Hills Police Department spokesman Keith Bauman, the victim told investigators that he had just gotten his white pickup back from the shop and had dinner with loved ones. While he was then on the highway, a dark-colored sedan pulled up close behind him.
The man tapped on his brakes to discourage the other driver. But that person pulled up to the man's left side and fired at least one gunshot into the truck. The sedan then fled from the scene.
A bullet went through the truck's door and struck the victim in the calf. The man then exited from the highway, called 911 and drove himself to a nearby emergency room. "He was cognizant after being shot," Bauman said.
The man's family said that the victim is expected to recover. His name has not yet been released. "We're just thankful that he's safe," Bauman stated. "He was able to drive himself to the hospital and he's going to be okay."
Meanwhile, police are investigating this as a case of road rage. They have not yet released a better description of the suspected shooter or that person's vehicle. "There's a lot of things to look at," Bauman said.
