Man Dies In University Park Police Custody

DALLAS (AP) - A 23-year-old man has died in the custody of suburban Dallas police officers who investigated reports of a suspicious person near a home.

Officials say Thomas E. Klessig of Dallas died Tuesday after struggling with University Park police officers, who used pepper spray to subdue him.

A police statement says officers responded to a report of a suspicious man in a neighborhood. An alarm company surveillance camera showed a man outside a residence.

Police say Klessig pushed one officer to the ground and fled on foot. Other officers tried to restrain him. Officers discharged pepper spray and medical personnel were summoned, as part of police department policy. Authorities say Klessig became unresponsive, was transported to a hospital and declared dead.

Texas Rangers will help investigate.
