FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - Teachers and Fort Worth police officers kept a close eye outside McLean Middle School when school let out late Thursday afternoon.

This after a man in a hoodie came on campus, brandished a knife, and cut the clothing of a student right before classes began Wednesday morning -- frightening students and parents.

The youngster wasn't cut or hurt otherwise.

Zoe Rodriguez, an 8th grade student said, "It was pretty scary, and I was nervous about it." Her mother, Alma Rodriguez, was equally concerned. "I was nervous, but I knew they were going to take care of it, it's a good school."

Nikki McInnis has two students at the school. "It's very alarming. A little scary, kids standing out on the plaza. Somebody pulling a knife."

Fort Worth ISD sent a note home with students alerting parents about what happened and how they were going to keep students safe.

Aside from the increased police and teacher presence outside school during drop-off and pick-up, the school also had staff at the various entrances.

Most parents said they're satisfied Fort Worth ISD stepped up to keep their students safe. The district is asking parents to wait to drop off students until 8:45 in the morning. The students will then be taken into the auditorium where they'll wait until classes begin.

Beatriz Orta says the incident is a good reminder why she takes her two children to and from school. "I want to feel better, I want to feel I'm doing my part trying to keep them safe."

A district spokesman says they have also notified parents and staff at McLean Sixth Grade campus down the street about the incident.
