IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Irving arrested a young man early Monday who allegedly broke into a school building.

Authorities were called to Farine Elementary School at around 1:30 a.m. and set up a perimeter around the campus.

According to a police report, officers came face to face with a young male suspect as they searched an inner courtyard area. Officials say the young man resisted being arrested and in officer's "attempts to gain control" one policeman accidentally fired a round from his duty pistol.

The bullet was found in an exterior wall of the school. No one was injured.

Investigators say a hammer and a backpack containing stolen property were found near where the struggle with the suspect occurred.

The suspect was arrested, after being treated for cuts and scrapes to his head unrelated to the gunshot. Because of his age, the suspect's name will not be released. The young man was booked into jail on a charge of Burglary of a Building.

Someone with Irving Independent School District security notified police about the man's presence after he was spotted on surveillance cameras, which is why officers were able to respond so quickly. It is not clear just how the suspect got into the school building, or what his motive was for being there.

"The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority," said Lesley Weaver with the Irving ISD. "We thank the Irving ISD security team and the Irving Police Department for working around the clock to keep our schools safe."

Officers combed over the campus, searching for additional suspects, but found no one.

This incident will not have any impact on students, because classes are not in session for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Farine Elementary School returns to its regular schedule on Wednesday.
