Major Storm Damage After Rain, Floods & High-Water Rescues

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Heavy rain and floods took dozens of North Texas drivers by surprise -- leading to more than 40 high-water rescues in Fort Worth. In the course of a few hours, firefighters responded to more than 200 calls for help.

The deluge knocked down nearly two-dozen power lines. According to Oncor, as of 10 p.m., there were still some 8,000 customers without power.

While the rain has stopped for the most part and floodwaters are receding the damage left behind is more evident to some than others.

Residents on the south side of Fort Worth call it a 'neighborhood secret,' tonight that special place is no more.

High winds and heavy rains completely destroyed the Wine Haus on Park Place.

The intimate wine store and bar dealt exclusively with wines made by smaller independent producers. In addition to wines on tap the boutique shop also offered a limited selection of local import craft beers.

CBS 11 Storm Team Meteorologist Larry Mowry confirmed that between two and three inches of rain fell in just over an hour near the business -- not far from Baylor All Saints Medical Center.

From the outside the building only looks a little windblown and wet, but inside was a different story. The roof caved in and flooded the entire building.

Owner Lindsey Crawford actually lives in an apartment above the Wine Haus. Thankfully she and her Great Dane made it out safely.

The Wine Haus hadn't celebrated its one-year anniversary -- having just opened in October of 2013.

As if heavy rain, flooding and high water rescues weren't enough, Fort Worth firefighters also responded to eight fires during the storm. Investigators believe lightning sparked at least one of those fires.
