DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - For the ninth year in a row, the League of United Latin American Citizens hosted "Cena En El Barrio," or dinner in the neighborhood to help people in need.

An assembly line of Santa's helpers cheerfully loaded goodie bags with all the food needed to make this tradition of giving a reality.

Plump cooked turkeys, cans of green beans, bags of rice and potatoes filled thousands of dinner baskets that will make their way to more than 25 senior centers throughout North Texas just in time for the holidays.

Many of the volunteers from area high schools and colleges donning bright red Santa hats have helped out before.

"I really enjoyed the feeling of giving back to the community and so I did it again. I helped create the event and get food donated by my school," said Ashley Guevara, one of more than 200 volunteers. She's a senior at Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School.

LULAC extended its help to a number of migrant children staying with foster families in North Texas this year.

"It doesn't matter where you're from or where you came from. We just want you to be welcome," said volunteer Hector Robledo.

LULAC collected more than 1,000 toys for children who might be celebrating the holidays in the United States for the very first time. It worked along with Catholic Charities to make their holiday season a little brighter.

"We just want to see them smile," Robledo said.

"I don't know if they've ever had a toy at Christmas in their home countries but hopefully this will make a difference," said Christopher Enriquez, District III Deputy Director of LULAC's collegiate branch.

For students such as Geuvara, volunteering is about making a difference for her elders, and for future generations.
"I want to show girls younger than me, my own posterity, that I can do that. I just want to be a role model," she said.
