The Little Free Pantry in McKinney is a large white cabinet on Virginia Street, just outside Hug's Cafe, where people do as the sign says..."Take what you need...leave what you can".

The idea started in Michigan in 2009 for a little free library where folks could leave a book or take a book from a little box on the street.

"When I looked up on line just to see how do you paint them and what are they suppose to look like, I put in 'little free library' and a 'little free pantry' popped up" said the owner and creator of the Little Free Pantry in McKinney Kim Sanchez.

It's almost like magic when people come and go, leave and take the food and other items.  They find everything from paper towels, toothpaste, tooth brushes to fresh bread and fruit occasionally.

"Very rarely do we actually see the people dropping off and picking up.  We are just surprised every day when we come and check on it that there is always new items" said  assistant for the Little Free Pantry AJ Micheletto.

It has met with very little controversy, unlike some of the little free libraries in the Dallas area.  McKinney residents, churches and businesses have joined in on the blessings.

"I called it a Little Free Pantry so that people understood that it was pantry and that they could get food, but I've seen them called a blessing boxes.  It is a blessing for those that give and those that take" added Sanchez.
