Lightning Blamed For Several House Fires
RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - Some strong storms moved across North Texas late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. Heavy rain pounded parts of the Metroplex and lightning is being blamed for several house fires.
Emergency crews responded to a blaze in the 3200 block of Robert Drive, where the second story of a home was completely destroyed. Firefighters arrived to find intense flames. The fire was quickly extinguished, but not before severely damaging the structure. Thankfully, the family was able to reach safety and nobody was injured.
The homeowner said he felt the house shake before the power went out and rooms started to fill with smoke. Firefighters were able to save some of the family's belongings from the charred house.
The sound of the lightning strike alerted several neighbors, including some who thought that their own house had been struck. "That scared me so badly, because everything was lit up so much," said neighbor Jennifer Hamilton. "It was completely white in the sky."
Another home in Lewisville was als0 damaged by fire on Thursday morning. It happened in the 2700 block of Seven Shields Lane. The family was sleeping in a downstairs bedroom when they heard a loud booming sound above them. They went upstairs, saw flames and immediately called for help. Once again, firefighters arrived and quickly knocked down the blaze. Nobody was hurt.
Meanwhile, emergency officials in Plano reported two house fires early Thursday morning, including one in the 6500 block of Riverhill Drive and another in the 2900 block of Shalimar Drive. The calls were received about 15 minutes apart from each other. Both homes had extensive amounts of damage, but no injuries were reported in those incidents either. The blazes were also said to be the result of lightning strikes.
Plano firefighters received a third report about a lightning strike at a home in the 6600 block of Wickliff Trail. Crews were able to find evidence of the strike, but there were no flames present.
Lightning was also responsible for a house fire in Little Elm on Thursday morning. Officials have not released further details about that incident.
