DES MOINES, IA (CBSDFW.COM) - "We need someone on day one who's ready to go to the White House," Ted Cruz volunteer Ivette Lozano says into a phone at Cruz campaign headquarters.
Lozano is among the 800 Texans who've come to Iowa to volunteer for Ted Cruz's presidential campaign. She is a doctor in Dallas, worried about Obamacare, and she closed her office this week so she can help Cruz win here. It wasn't an easy decision from a business point of view.
"Financially, it's devastating. This is flu season, this is when I'm the busiest, but let me explain something. If we don't get Senator Ted Cruz elected, I won't have a practice," said Lozano.
Maggie Wright of Burleson has helped make phone calls and door knock for 50 days now.
If that isn't enough to prove her commitment, this is her SUV, and it's not the first time she's done this.
"When he announced for President, he said you'll have to drive your car all around Texas again, and I said, Ted I'm getting it wrapped. He said you're going to have to go all over the nation. I got it wrapped in August, and here you are," said Wright.
During an interview Sunday night, Senator Cruz says volunteers like Wright & Lozano have made a difference.
"I tell you the Texans in particular are incredible because they can share personal stories, they can say listen, I knew this guy when he was at 2% in the Senate race," said Cruz.
Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Cruz's campaign chairman in Texas, is volunteering in a different way Monday night.
"I'm at a caucus with Rubio, so Rubio will be the speaker and I'll be representing Ted," said Lt. Gov. Patrick.
Senator Cruz will be speaking at a caucus in Cedar Rapids tonight, where he hopes to convince Republicans to vote for him.
Donald Trump won't be addressing a caucus, but his children will be.
Marco Rubio will be speaking near Des Moines.
