Largest Collin County Dog Kennel Loses Funding
COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - The largest kennel in Collin County has lost funding and hundreds of unwanted dogs have nowhere to go. Camp Diggy Bones kennel operators are relying on day-to-day donations of food to keep 300 dogs alive. It's an absolute crisis, according to several animal welfare groups.
"It's beyond critical because we've used since June more personal funds and it costs a lot of money to care for these dogs," said Camp Diggy Bones operator Gene Mason. He has owned the kennel for four years. Mason has spent $80,000 from his personal 401k after the rescue group near Waco that was subsidizing him stopped sending money in December.
Six buildings house hundreds of unwanted Pit Bulls and Rottweiler mixes. But Mason said 200 of the 300 dogs are considered non-aggressive and adoptable.
"It's huge. It's the biggest I've ever been aware of and we've had a couple of hoarding cases sometimes where there's 40, 50, 60 dogs that will hit the news -- but 300 is the biggest I've ever seen," said Mark Verma with animal welfare group Paws In The City.
