Two first responders, three juveniles injured in large Forney fight, multiple agencies investigating
FORNEY — Two first responders and at least three juveniles were injured after a large fight broke out in Forney Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Around 4:30 p.m., officers were called to Falcon Way and Jersey Lane, near North Forney High School and Smith Intermediate School, for a report of "300 people" involved in a fight, Kaufman County Constable Jason Johnson said.
A Kaufman County Sheriff's Office deputy and a Forney Independent School District officer attempted to break up the fight, according to Kaufman County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Scott Whitaker.
The Forney ISD officer "was jumped from behind," Whitaker said, and one or more of the suspects tried to grab an officer's gun.
Johnson confirmed suspects tried to take an officer's gun, which then discharged. He clarified that no one was hit by gunfire.
Whitaker said the bullet hit the concrete street, and the deputy was hit in the leg by fragments from the discharge. The district officer and three juveniles were also hit by fragments, he said. All sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Whitaker said the district officer received treatment on-scene and the deputy and three juveniles were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Forney ISD's Executive Director of Communications Kristin Zastoupil said the incident was "after hours, off-site, and not a school incident," later clarifying that the district officers responded to assist when a request for backup was sent out.
The Forney Police Department said it is assisting the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office. Whitaker said no arrests had been made.
Texas Rangers are investigating the gun discharge. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the fight.
