Rangers DH Lance Berkman Retires From Baseball, Ending 15-Year MLB Career

ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - After spending 15-years as a professional baseball player, Lance Berkman decided to retire, he told MLB.com on Wednesday afternoon.

"I've had a great career," Berkman said. "I did everything anyone could have set out to do. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next."

Berkman, a native of Waco, Texas joined the Rangers in 2013 after spending the previous year with the St. Louis Cardinals.

"It doesn't make sense to play in the physical condition I'm in," Berkman said siting the many problems he has had with his knees that limited him to 73 games last season with the Rangers.

According to MLB.com: During his first 12 seasons, including 10-plus with the Astros, he averaged 30 home runs, 34 doubles, 95 walks and had a .410 on-base percentage and a .958 on-base-plus-slugging.

His .9429 OPS is the 26th-highest in history among players with at least 500 games. It's higher than Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Hank Aaron.
