Lack Of Flu Vaccines In Plano Turns Hundreds Away
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM/CBS 11 News) - Out of nearly 1,100 people who went to the Chase Oaks Family Center in Plano for a flu shot Saturday, only 650 walked away vaccinated.
So far, the flu has claimed the lives of at least 30 people in North Texas, with 26 of those from Dallas County, three in Denton County, and one Tarrant County.
Fear of severe illness and even death has pushed people to get vaccinated over the past months.
Organizers with Medical Reserve Corps say the city of Plano donated the vaccines, hoping to alleviate some of that panic and fear. But they didn't expect so many people to have waited this long to get the vaccine.
"I think we probably turned away easily 4 or 5 hundred people," Rebecca Drekmann, Collin County Medical Reserve Corps co-ordinator said.
Now hundreds of people continue to search for a vaccine.
Medical experts said the lesson in all of this is for people to get flu shots early in the season, and to never wait until the last minute.
