Josh Brent May Return To Cowboys
IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent was released from jail early on Sunday. He was scheduled to finish his intoxication manslaughter sentence in July. But, according to the Dallas County District Attorney's office, he will serve the final six weeks of his 180-day sentence in a rehab treatment facility.
Brent was convicted in January in a car crash that killed teammate and friend Jerry Brown Jr. in December 2012. His blood-alcohol level on the night of the crash was more than twice the legal limit.
On Friday, Brent asked a Dallas County judge to allow him to serve the remainder of his sentence in an in-patient treatment facility. He then left prison just after noon on Sunday. In addition to his jail sentence, Brent must also serve 10 years probation.
Brent has a three-page list of conditions that he must foll0w as part of his release. He cannot possess, consume or purchase alcoholic beverages. And, within 180 days, he must participate in a DWI intervention repeat offender program.
Privately, the Cowboys front office has long maintained ties with Brent despite his official retirement from the NFL. Earlier this month, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones suggested that the team could bring him back onto the roster, and is in touch with the NFL on such a move.
Assuming that Brent does apply for reinstatement -- the end of his sentence coordinates with the July 23 beginning of Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California -- he could be suspended by the league for a time under the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy. It is also unknown if Brent would be allowed to train during his rehabilitation treatment.
Throughout most of this case, Brown's mother has stood behind Brent. That could play a big role in Brent's possible return to football.
