Johnny Football Is Not The Last Great QB

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- If you aren't a Tony Romo fan, this article is up your alley.

If you are a Tony Romo fan, then you are a Cowboys fan and realistic enough to understand my point here.

The freak out is finally over right?

We've all given up on the "Jerry screwed us all by not taking Johnny Football" bit right?

I hope so, because Jerry (and Will McClay) made these decisions based on the big picture of this Cowboys team, and plotted like farmers with their choices.

By drafting offensive guard Zack Martin, they gave Romo the  better protection up the middle he was asking for. Don't forget how much more effective Brian Waters was at RG than Mackenzy Bernadeau.

The seed planted at RG now means you have a solid player there, if you want, for a long time.  It's like squash, just throw the seeds out there and they will return plentiful fruit for a long time.

Also take into consideration the future.

They want to give Tony Romo every possible chance to be a success. I admire that and hope he can do it with a better supporting cast.

However, say something does happen this season, and Romo does get hurt. If it's early, this team trots out Brandon Weeden or Kyle Orton as the fall guy. They try really hard and hey maybe they do good, and the Cowboys get into the playoffs. Season a success!

Or maybe they suck and the Cowboys get in the top 10 for next year's draft.

They then have every reason to bail on Romo's contract, which Mike Fisher has pointed out on a number of occasions is the perfect offseason to get out of that contract and absorb that cap hit. With the possibility of a bad record, they now have a reason to pursue a Top 10 QB in 2015.

In that instance, you already have a stud offensive line capable of protecting a rookie QB and covering up some of his blemishes with the run. It softens the blow of having a rookie QB when your line is the best unit on the team.

Also, Demarcus Lawrence will be in his second year. You can add a couple of other good defensive picks and then you have a cheap QB for years to come while adding to the Cowboys talent pool in free agency if you need to -- because you are saving money.

Look I know you all liked JFF, but it's not like he's the last good QB to hit the draft. There will be more, take a look at these guys, I'm already excited about Mariota or Bryce Petty. The great thing about the NFL draft is it happens every year. It's a way to grow your team.

Sometimes, however you have to wait for things to bloom.
