DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Jerry Jones joined the GBAG Nation for his weekly interview on Friday. During the conversation, Jones was asked about the lack of depth behind Tony Romo.

The Cowboys owner has taken some heat recently for not having a better quarterback behind Romo in case the franchise quarterback went down, like he did in week two.

"You'd like to give yourself an opportunity to develop (a back-up quarterback)," Jones said. "We've had veteran quarterbacks here for about most of Jason's (Garrett) tenure that were ready to step in there and play, and they did a real good job. We probably weren't in that situation during these last five or six games. I really thought we had the quarterback in for the last five games that we could win two or three of them."

The Cowboys have had an opportunity to take a quarterback in the draft over the last few seasons in the draft, but have passed on the chance to do so, most notably two years ago when Johnny Manziel fell to Dallas and the Cowboys elected to pick Zach Martin instead. "With Martin sitting there, we had Manziel at the top of our board. We're sitting there and grinding through, should we go for this opportunity to take a quarterback that's high, that's dropped down and start getting ready for when Romo is not here or God forbid, he got hurt. That's why I sat there for the last minute and stared at everybody so that we could say is this that shot? You can, (in) hindsight, look at how things have gone in Cleveland, but still that's exactly why we sat there and had the agony. I couldn't see how you could exist with that young quarterback & Romo being here for the next five or six years."

Jerry Jones also said that he recently spent time talking with Romo and the two discussed what Romo would look for in drafting a college QB. "Romo, in real genuineness, said that we're not ready for the quarterback (of the future). When we are, don't worry about it and I'll find him for you."
