Jerry Expects To See 'Improved' Romo Against 49ers
DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- Most people are concerned about quarterback Tony Romo heading into week 1 against San Francisco. Not owner Jerry Jones.
The Cowboys GM & President doesn't think we will see the same Romo as last season -- in fact, we'll see an "improved" version.
"Yes. I think you will physically see him," said Jones with Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan. "You'll also see an improved player relative to the experience and the time that he's spent with his new coordinator [Scott Linehan]. This is a real successful match-up, and I think these guys are going to be pretty effective with the way they work together."
Jones says Romo and the passing-game coordinator are often thinking the same things -- something Romo has communicated.
"We're going to be pretty pleased with that combination."
A JOSH BRENT DECISION FROM THE NFL?
The Cowboys have expressed a desire to have DL Josh Brent on the field this season. But the NFL and Roger Goodell have yet to announce a possible suspension for the season.
"I have indication, but I'm not at liberty to talk about when," said Jones. "I certainly have had an indication that he will be reinstated, but the commissioner on matters of league punishment moves at his own rate."
CONCERNING MICHAEL SAM
After being released by the St. Louis Rams, defensive end Michael Sam passed through waivers without being claimed on Sunday.
Sam, the first openly gay NFL player, is now free to sign with any NFL team. Are the defensive-needy Cowboys interested?
"I don't want to talk about available players," said Jones. "That's not good strategy. We've got competition out here. We've got a lot of reasons for not talking about maybes."
MELTON, CLAIBORNE TO PLAY
If the Cowboys defense is to improve in 2014, it will likely include contributions from defensive tackle Henry Melton and cornerback Mo Claiborne.
Neither has participated this preseason, but Jones thinks both will suit up on Sunday against the 49ers.
"We're planning on both to play. Hopefully, Claiborne is certainly ready to go. Melton looked good initially on Monday, but he'll get a full load Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and we'll be able to see more there. Everything looks on go for him."
Melton tore his ACL last September while playing with Chicago. Claiborne has missed the entire preseason while dealing with knee tendinitis and a sprained AC joint in his shoulder.
