Irving Apartment Fire Injures Three, Displaces More Than 80 Residents
IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - A four-alarm fire that broke out around 1:53 a.m. Saturday at the Finley Terrace Apartments of Irving injured three people, and has displaced more than 80 residents.
Residents woke up to screaming and chaos as neighbors worked to alert one another about the fire.
"All of a sudden she hears a knock on her door and everyone is screaming 'Get out! Get out! Get out! Hurry!'" said Juan Trevino, who was at work when he got a frantic phone call from his wife. "She just grabbed what she could and got out."
Rosalia Rivera and her husband heard the noise outside and saw the fire when they looked outside. They woke their three daughters and left their apartment with only the clothes on their backs.
"We figured we'd be able to return to some of our stuff since it was across in a whole other building," Rivera said.
First responders arrived on scene around 2 a.m., and continued to bring the fire under control by 3:40 a.m.
The massive fire required the work of 49 firefighters with nine fire engines and four trucks.
Initially, no injuries were reported, but by Saturday evening CBS 11 News learned that two residents and one fire fighter were injured.
In addition, 48 adults and 36 children have been left homeless after the blaze destroyed 30 units, according to Irving Assistant Fire Chief Wilson.
"It's the worst feeling ever, you take things for granted," Rivera said. "I mean it's just stuff, but it's a lot of memories that we lost in there."
The American Red Cross has assigned support crews to the displaced residents, with temporary shelters staged at a church across the street from the fire.
