DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Freezing rain affected travel across nearly half of the state on Monday, and winter storm warnings were issued in the northern part of the state.

Just over 1,000 departing and arriving flights have been canceled at DFW International Airport on Monday, and there are many more delays. Some of those delays are due to deicing the planes.

DFW International Airport spokeswoman Cynthia Vega said that many of the cancellations were decided upon prior to Monday.

Around 325 people slept at the airport Sunday night. Vega said that this less than normal during such a winter weather event. Airport officials anticipate that more people may have to sleep at the airport on Monday night, as airlines cancel and delay additional flights.

As always, the best advice for North Texas travelers is to call ahead from home and check to see if your flight on either Monday or Tuesday has been impacted by the winter storm.

Even the roads getting into the airport are treacherous. But, once inside, snowplows are moving around trying to clear the sleet away. DFW International Airport spokeswoman Cynthia Vega explained that the flyover bridges at Terminal C and Terminal E have been closed due to icy conditions.

Forecasters said that up to an inch of ice was possible in areas of North Texas through late Monday, when the freezing rain was expected to ease. Temperatures in Dallas on Monday morning were in the upper 20s and likely to fall through the day.

A thunderstorm with sleet was reported in Parker County, near Fort Worth.
