Hundreds Gather To Remember SMU Officer Swept Away By Flood

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Southern Methodist University police officer missing for more than three weeks is being remembered today.
A special memorial service is being held for Officer Mark McCullers. The 43-year-old was swept away in floodwaters on July 5.
Officer McCullers was working an overnight private security job when he called police and said rising waters were washing over his car. By the time emergency crews arrived there was no sign of McCullers or his car. His body has yet to be found.
The ceremony today is to honor his life. Hundreds of family, friends and fellow police officers packed the McFarlin Auditorium on the SMU campus to say goodbye.
McCullers' brother-in-law and SMU Police Chief Richard Shafer both talked about the life and legacy of their loved one and friend.
Ribbons and tributes filled with heartfelt messages are spread across the campus. Student Madison Cansler said, "It makes you feel good about going here, just 'cause knowing that everyone supports each other. Seeing the signs around campus is just another way of knowing that everyone is together and trying to support everyone else."
The memorial service will end outside with a flyover, flags being presented to McCullers' family and a 21-gun salute.
