HURST (CBSDFW.COM) - A homeowner in Hurst was shot while confronting a robbery suspect on Thursday night, but was then able to return fire, killing one suspect and wounding another man. It started at about 8:15 p.m. in the 100 block of Charlene Drive.

The resident, who had been victimized several times before by robberies and thefts, noticed a suspicious vehicle parked near his home. "He got a weapon from his house and he saw another suspect walking through the back field behind his fence line," stated Assistant Police Chief Richard Winstanley with the Hurst Police Department. "We're not sure exactly how it started, but gunfire erupted."

The homeowner was struck in the hip during the shootout. But, despite his wound, he then returned fire at the suspect vehicle as it was attempting to leave. That car was stopped by Euless police officers along nearby Highway 10, and two men were found inside. One man was dead and the other was injured.

The resident was taken to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth and is expected to be okay. The injured suspect was also taken to a local hospital and should also survive, Winstanley said. No names have been released.

Police believe that the two men robbed a nearby convenience store before being confronted by the homeowner, using a dark field near the neighborhood to access the store. The store's owner told police that one suspect grabbed a customer in the parking lot and forced them into the store at gunpoint, demanding money. At least one of the suspects is believed to be a serial robber, responsible for four crimes in Euless since November.

At this point, police said, it is too early to determine whether or not the homeowner will face any charges. "We're trying to determine his side of the story," Winstanley added.

Neighbors described the homeowner as a good guy, and believe that he fired shots as an act of self-defense.
