GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Crews in Garland are now in the process of moving a large historic home through the city's downtown area. The move started at around 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday and could last through a significant part of the day, just to travel a few blocks.

The Lyles House is one of the oldest homes in Garland. After controversy erupted, city officials decided not to demolish the structure. Instead of facing bulldozers, it is being towed to a different location on Tuesday.

The house began its journey at a temporary location, behind the Granville Arts Center. It will have a permanent spot in Heritage Crossing, at the intersection of Sixth Street and Walnut Street, just behind the Central Library. The journey is only about three blocks.

Cars that were left parked along the path were towed away -- and not just a few blocks. Vehicles are permitted to return to the streets and parking areas once the home has cleared each section of the route.
