Highway Construction Posing Problems For Firefighters
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - A traffic mess in North Fort Worth shut down the highway.
An 18-wheeler caught on fire during the morning rush hour.
The big rig was carrying 12-hundred cases of wine.
The fire happened on the North Freeway near Basswood Boulevard.
It's an area undergoing major construction.
The location made it difficult for firefighters to access water.
"We did sent additional units because of the restricted access to water along the service road," explains Tim Hardeman with the Fort Worth Fire Department. "All of our trucks carry some amount of water either 500 or 750 gallons of water an incident like that we are going to use a lot more water."
Hardeman says two trucks responded immediately.
The department also sent a water tanker carrying 5000 gallons of water.
The closest fire hydrant is about 500 yards from the fire.
"That's a big problem," says driver Clay Majoro. "That will concern me."
No one was hurt in the fire, but drivers like Majoro worry that's only a matter of time.
"That's scary. There should definitely be alternative plans of having water available," says driver Cecilia London. "It's a scary thought."
CBS 11 checked with the Texas Department of Transportation and was told that no hydrants have been moved.
The Fort Worth Fire Department says if a hydrant is out of service, usually a black plastic bag is placed over it.
Police investigators say right now they are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
