Harley Clark, Creator Of "Hook 'Em Horns" Dead At 78

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The University of Texas says the former cheerleader and state judge credited with creating the "Hook 'em Horns" hand signal has died.

Harley Clark was 78. School officials said Clark died Thursday at his farm near Dripping Springs outside of Austin.

Clark was a Longhorns cheerleader when he introduced the "Hook 'em Horns" signal at a 1955 pep rally before Texas played TCU. Former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, a former Texas cheerleader and current head of the Texas Exes alumni group, says Clark introduced a symbol of Longhorn pride recognized around the world.

Clark later became a lawyer and was appointed a state judge district in 1977. His landmark 1987 decision that the state's public school finance system was unconstitutional was upheld by the Texas Supreme Court.
