FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - The Fort Worth police chief said that body and dashboard camera footage supports the actions of an officer who fatally shot a man armed with a baseball bat and a screwdriver.

Chief Jeffrey Halstead identified the officer as E. Gasca on Thursday. Police stated that the suspect came out of a Gas Pipe store along Camp Bowie Boulevard in Fort Worth late Tuesday night. The suspect refused to drop his weapons and charged at officers.

Halstead said that Gasca tried to retreat for more than 15 feet before he fired one shot, striking the man in the chest.

The suspect's identity has not been released.

Gasca was hired in December 2013 and has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.
