Gun Group Raising Police Brutality Awareness
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The unrest in Ferguson is shining a bright light on police in Missouri and all around the nation. Now, a gun group from North Texas is taking their message to the streets of Dallas on Wednesday. The event is organized by the Huey P. Newton Gun Club.
Huey P. Newton was one of the two people who founded the Black Panther party in the 1960s. Organizers said that the group includes people who have lost faith in police. The goal is to raise awareness about police brutality.
The group plans to walk along the sidewalk on MLK Boulevard, in what is being referred to as an "armed self-defense patrol." A spokesperson for the gun group said that the event would be similar to an open carry rally. But a press release detailing the event said, "The people who are gunned down and murdered by violent and militarized police forces have formed the Huey P. Newton Gun Club for the specific purpose of self-defense and community policing."
The participants will be "black and brown residents of the City of Dallas." Organizers expect between 15 and 30 people at the event, which is set to start at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
The gun group also has a number of demands that it wants met, including an immediate end to police brutality. They assert the right to bear arms, particularly for people of color. The group is also critical of the way that news media portrays the victims of alleged police brutality. A source stated that police officials hope to meet with the group's leaders in order to talk about the concerns.
