AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Thanks to a new law set to kick in on September 1, Texas Colleges and Universities will have an additional $4 billion to elevate their national standing in research.

Under Governor Abbott's University Research Initiative Texas colleges and universities will have access to a billion dollars to help promote research capabilities and attract Nobel, Laureate and National Academy level talent.

The schools will also have access to $3 billion more in bonds and allowances to improve research facilities.

Abbott says at a time when other states are cutting back, Texas is providing the resources to researchers who are already here as well as the brightest minds from around the globe.

University of Texas at Austin President Greg Fenves says they plan on using it to bring top people to Austin. "This is a huge message going out to the rest of the country that Texas is investing in its research universities."
