GARLAND (CBS11) – Medical experts say the act of giving could have more health benefits than many would even think of.

Andrea Gonzalez, a mental health counselor at Parkland Hospital said, "You might see folks that will have lower blood pressure, less stress, sometimes they'll talk about having less pains, but overall it's just a great thing for their mood."

According to Gonzalez,  the health benefits are so great she often prescribes volunteer work to some of her patients.

Gonzalez added, "often times when I have patients that are feeling depressed, or anxious, or lonely we'll talk about volunteering giving their time."

Gonzalez says that allows people to have a sense of purpose and involvement in the community.
