Girl Scout Cookies Are Here...With Some Changes!

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - It's a sight so many of us look forward to seeing each year - Girl Scouts selling their cookies!

There are a lot of changes this year and for the better.

The Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas kicked off the 2014 cookie program with "Cookies Now!"

"This is their jump start program and they all get their cookies to hit the road selling cookies this afternoon," Debbie Fritz, Troop Leader 4810.

That's a change for the Girl Scouts.  This year, you don't have to fill out a form and wait.  Instead, you can get cookies instantly, just like nearly 100 years ago.

"Initially they baked their own cookies and they put them on their little wagons and they went door to door selling cookies," said Fritz.

Also new this year, a cookie with nine grams of whole grain, called the Cranberry Crisp.  Whatever flavor you choose, the cost is the same, $4 a box, with nearly half of that money going to the girls.

"Twenty four percent of the proceeds of the sales stay with the individual girls and troops, 49% stays within our council for council needs and scholarships, and the rest of it goes to the baker," explains Fritz.

Nearly 40,000 cases of cookies were distributed today, with each girl getting about 12 cases.  It's a lot of boxes, raising a lot of money.  For the girls, what they get from selling cookies is priceless.

"I was shy and I've learned how to talk to people a lot more," said Senior Girl Scout Abby Rosemann.  "I've learned so many different things, selling cookies has helped a lot."
