Garrett: Cowboys Awaiting MRI Results, Anticipate Romo Will Play

ARLINGTON (105.3 THE FAN) -- Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett says the team anticipates that Tony Romo will play on Sunday against Arizona after the quarterback suffered a back contusion in Monday night's loss to the Redskins.

The team is still awaiting the results of an MRI taken Tuesday, Garrett announced this afternoon.

Romo was injured in the third quarter when Redskins linebacker Keenan Robinson appeared to deliver a knee to Romo's back on a third down sack. Brandon Weeden entered the game and played two series while Romo received medical attention in the team's locker room.

"Obviously he was cleared to go back in the game last night, so we felt good enough about that when the initial X-rays were negative," said Garrett on Tuesday. "They want to do some more extensive tests. We'll find out more as the day goes on."

Garrett says that Romo felt good when he left the stadium Monday night, and the team "anticipates him being ready to go." But Romo also admitted to needing a pain injection before returning to action in the fourth quarter.

Romo returned for the team's final two drives -- the first a 6-play drive with under two minutes left in regulation. The Cowboys eventually punted.  Romo also took the field in overtime for the game-clinching turnover on downs.

Many have speculated that Dallas should have left Weeden in the game. The 31-year-old backup had led Dallas to 10 points on two drives on 4-of-6 passing.

Garrett says the team never considered leaving Weeden in the game -- that is, if Romo was deemed healthy.

"It's just a medical decision. It's as simple as that," said Garrett. "The doctors examined him. They do the tests that they think are necessary. When he comes back out, you just want to see if he's able to function -- move around, throw the ball, and feel natural and normal. All those things appeared to be in place."

"Tony is a tough guy. We know that. He's physically tough. He's mentally tough. Once he's cleared to play, he's obviously our quarterback and he goes back in."

Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones was seen on the sideline after the injury speaking with Garrett. Despite some speculative reports, Garrett says Jones was not ordering that Romo be placed back in the game. He was simply relaying information.

"He just told me what the doctors had said. He was in the locker room when they examined him, and I guess he heard what it was. He just came out and told me it was this, this and this. He'll be ready to go."

Jason Garrett will address the media during a regularly scheduled press conference at 2 p.m. Listen on 105.3 The Fan!
