Garland Police Chase Ends In Crash Near SMU

GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) -- A motorcyclist crashed near SMU early Friday morning after leading police on a chase that began with a routine traffic stop in Garland.

Just after 1 a.m., a Garland Police officer attempted to perform the stop in the area of Jupiter Road and I-635 for an unknown traffic violation.

The motorcycle fled west on LBJ and then traveled south on U.S. Highway 75.  The motorcycle crashed near the SMU campus after exiting Mockingbird Lane.

After a short chase on foot, 39-year-old Charles Cottrill was taken into custody. He has been charged with Evading, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.

Bond has not yet been set.

A Garland squad car overheated during the chase and was later towed away.
