GARLAND, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Garland police say two elderly people were shot to death in what's believed to be a murder suicide at an assisted living facility.

Officer Joe Harn says police responded to an emergency call around 11:00am Tuesday to the Winter Park Assisted Living and Memory Care located in the 3400 block of Wagon Wheel Road.

He says it appears 85-year old Arthur Smith shot and killed his 81-year old wife Charlene before turning the gun on himself.

They were both residents of the center, but Officer Harn says Charlene lived in the Memory Care unit which housed people dealing with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Detectives will wait on a cause of death from the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office before making an official ruling.
