GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Firefighters put out a house fire on South Glenbrook in Garland Wednesday evening.

The 86-year-old homeowner, survived the fire without injuries. He was asleep inside when the fire broke out. Neighbors said they were worried when he tried to fight flames with a fire extinguisher.

His grandson, Doug Haefner watched as the fire destroyed his childhood home.

"It's been a good house I grew up there he helped raise me there I'm just kind of at a loss for words right now,' said Haefner.

Almost everything inside the home years sustained severe fire or water damage.

"It was just unreal you could feel the heat from this side of the street," said neighbor Josh Combs.

Firefighters have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, which cost the elderly man and his wife their home of more than 50 years.

"I think that's what's going to hurt in the most is that that's the house where they grew old together and it's gone," said Combs.

It doesn't appear a heater, fireplace or anything associated with the cold weather caused the fire.
