FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The Fort Worth Independent School District is one step closer to hiring a new superintendent, and it comes with the first day of school just weeks away. A special meeting has been called for Thursday and there is only one thing on the agenda -- the superintendent's job.

School board members have been interviewing candidates all summer long, even conducting some interviews on the weekends to try and get this position filled before the start of the new school year.

The special meeting is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Thursday and will take place behind closed doors.

The district has been in turmoil since Walter Dansby abruptly called it quits in June of last year. The finalist who was supposed to be the district's next leader backed out in February after an intensive search.

Now, a familiar face is running the school district. Dr. Pat Linares took over after Dansby left. She retired in 2010 as the deputy superintendent, and knows the district and the students very well. However, Linares has stated that she does not want the job.

School district officials said Tuesday morning that, after the Thursday meeting, there are no plans to announce a decision. Even if a new superintendent is named on Thursday, it could still be some time before that individual is offered a contract. Texas law requires school boards to wait three weeks after announcing a lone finalist.
